Designer Behind Mayada
Salam all!
I’m Felicia, some know me as Khadija. I’m a revert alhumdulillah, married to an Egyptian, with 5 kiddies, who love to keep me busy. I’m a coffee and dark chocolate lover, travel addict, and a woman with a mission.
I run a ladies halaqa in my local community with some amazing women, and we arrange yearly events for our kids to enrich their learning of the deen (religion).
I’m also the designer behind Mayada, I sketch each piece to curate a beautiful collection, it goes through an editing process, to chose the very best for the current collection, fabric selection, sampling and finally producing the finished product that you get to chose from each season. All ethically produced, which is something very important to me. Where we chose to put our money has an impact!
I started Mayada with a dream to shatter the misconceptions of who we are as Muslim women, who chose modesty as a way of living, and to take back the narrative told on our behalf.
I was tired of the challenge of shopping, I know many can relate with the transparent fabrics, slits, too short, plunging necklines, and the altering and uncomfortable layering to achieve the modest look. Like seriously, was it too much to ask for a stylish modest dress, skirt or shirt.
We deserve better, which is why I have taken this path, finally after the 5 years of contemplating it back and forth. I believe through fashion we can make a great impact for our community, by showing the world who we really are in our own voice, by example and exposure.
Like in any new path, there are challenges and moment where you just cry and say this is just too much for one person. But when your work aligns with your life’s mission and purpose, you surely will not let the bumps in the road stop you. I know inshAllah I won’t.
I hope you too follow your dreams, they might seem way out of reach at the moment, but Allah wouldn’t have given you that vision if you couldn’t do it.
So go after your dreams, trust me it’s the most fulfilling thing!
Tell me more about you. I would love to get to know you better.
